Sony ships 20-percent thinner PS Vita Slim in United States

updated 02:33 pm EDT, Tue May 6, 2014

Handheld Sony game system is 15 percent lighter than original PS Vita

Sony has released an updated PlayStation Vita model in the United States, after introducing it in the United Kingdom in January, and its successful Japanese launch late last year. The PS Vita Slim is 20 percent slimmer and 15 percent lighter than the original version, with relatively few changes made to the handheld game console overall.

The OLED panel in the first PS Vita has been exchanged for a 960x540 IPS LCD version, which when combined with the other improvements, boosts the battery power to last up to six hours. While it has the same quad-core Cortex A9-based processor with 512MB of RAM and 128MB of VRAM, it adds 1GB of built-in storage for game installs and other content. Connecting the PS Vita Slim has also changed, with Sony's proprietary solution changed for a more mainstream microUSB version.
