Microsoft sends invitations to possible May 20 Surface Mini launch

CEO Nadella expected to attend small gathering for Surface

Microsoft is inviting members of the media to a Surface event on May 20th in New York City, which could see the software giant unveiling the rumored Surface Mini. While not directly mentioning it, the Surface logo and the hinting "Join us for a small gathering" text at the top of the invitation are subtle hints that a smaller version of Microsoft's tablet is on the way.

Sources of ZDNet claim new Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella will be attending the event suggesting it to be a major launch, something a new Surface would certainly qualify as. Little is known about the Surface Mini, though earlier rumors suggest it could have a 7.5-inch display and have a very similar styling to its full-size counterpart. Just as with the Surface, it is thought the Surface Mini will run Windows RT rather than full Windows 8.1, and it could also arrive with in Wi-Fi and LTE variants.

Offering a smaller-screened version of the Surface could help Microsoft gain ground in a market dominated by the iPad and Android devices. A recent web traffic report for the United States and Canada found that the Surface line accounted for just 1.6 percent of ad network impressions for tablets. In comparison, the Google Nexus tablet range had 2.2 percent, Amazon's Kindle Fire had 6.1 percent, Samsung tablets reached 8.3 percent, and the iPad led with 81.3 percent.
