Amazon adds shopping using Twitter hashtags in US, UK

updated 11:33 am EDT, Mon May 5, 2014

Twitter users reply to posts with hashtag to add items to Amazon cart

Amazon is expanding its purchasing options, by allowing customers to shop for products by posting on Twitter. Introduced today, users of both services can add items featured on the social media site directly to their cart by responding to specific posts with #AmazonCart, with the product then shown in the checkout section of Amazon's website for later purchase.

The service does have a few caveats for it to be usable to Amazon customers. Twitter accounts must be associated with the required Amazon account in order for it to function. It will also only work with Twitter posts that use Amazon URLs, and Amazon is quick to warn that it only adds items to a cart, and not actually purchasing the item until they visit the on-site cart.

Engadget reports the system works in the United States, with the United Kingdom getting its own #AmazonBasket command for to avoid confusion. Amazon has yet to reveal if the system will be heading to any other territories.
