Jury awards Apple extra $4M in second Apple v. Samsung trial [u]

Completes partial decision rendered on Friday

[Updated with news of extra adjustments] Following additional deliberations, the jury in the second Apple v. Samsung patent lawsuit has awarded Apple another $4 million in damages, reports say. In Friday's verdict, Apple was awarded almost $120 million, while Samsung received $158,400. The jury neglected to include damages relating to an Apple autocorrect patent though, and were asked by Judge Lucy Koh to correct the empty box on the form the group received. The jury chose to finish deliberations on Monday instead of staying late into the night on Friday.

The adjustment still leaves Apple well short of the $2.191 billion it was originally demanding. Furthermore, the final amounts the companies will owe could still change. During the first Apple v. Samsung case, Koh cut $450.5 million off the $1.05 billion originally given to Apple, citing jury errors. A retrial was scheduled for some of the damages, leading to the eventual sum of $939.8 million.

Samsung has meanwhile issued a statement on Friday's verdict. "We agree with the jury's decision to reject Apple's grossly exaggerated damages claim. Although we are disappointed by the finding of infringement, we are vindicated that for the second time in the US, Apple has been found to infringe Samsung's patents," it says. "It is our long history of innovation and commitment to consumer choice that has driven us to become the leader in the mobile industry today."

Update: The jury has also reportedly adjusted damages in other parts of the form. The net impact, therefore, is that the total damages awarded to Apple will remain at their original amount.
