Nokia job listings suggest return to iOS, Android for Here maps

updated 06:57 am EDT, Mon May 5, 2014

Advertisements hint at possible Here mapping suite of apps

Nokia could be preparing a new version of its Here mapping app for iOS and Android. Two job postings spotted on LinkedIn are searching for Android and iOS developers to work on the company's Here teams, and could signal a return to the platforms after the company sold its mobile phone business to Microsoft for approximately $7.2 billion.

The advertisements spotted by Nokia Power User are for postings in Frankfurt, Schwalbach, and Berlin. One listing asks specifically for an Android developer to work with the Community Mapping Product Team in the Here Core Platform Group to create an "entirely new type of community-driven mobile app targeting a global audience." The second is looking for an "Android / iOS developer" that is fluent in the "latest Java capabilities and improvements" on both platforms, though they will report to the Here Platform for Business teams.

While a new mapping application could help Nokia in its post-acquisition state, the job listings could be interpreted to mean Nokia is looking to expand its mapping capabilities, creating an entire mapping suite with "advanced location-based services."

Nokia had previously made its Here maps available on iOS, pulling it late last year over changes in iOS 7. It was thought to have been developing an Android version, though it has yet to be released.
