Google buys online shopping tracking firm RangeSpan

updated 11:59 am EDT, Sat May 3, 2014

Firm will bolster Google's shopping tools, enhance Google Shopping platform

Google has acquired shopping analytics firm RangeSpan. The firm is intended to help the firm's retail service Google Shopping combat Amazon, and will help Google form more business arrangements with retailers and help with inventory management and customer trend prediction. The existing service will be shut down, and customers have already begun transitioning to new offerings.

RangeSpan examined retailers stock versus online demand. Given the data provided by RangeSpan, retailers were more easily able to identify trends and the difference between what online shoppers demanded versus brick and mortar shoppers.

Speaking about the deal, a Google spokesman said that RangeSpan will "be joining our Shopping team to help us continue to improve our services for shoppers and retailers." Google declined to state terms of the deal.

"Some of us, including me, are moving over to join Google," RangeSpan founder Ryan Regan says. "There are a lot of parallels between what we are doing and what Google is doing, and we are excited to work together." Regan and some of the team will be moving to Google's Zurich office from its current London location.
