Samsung invites media to health-related event on May 28

updated 05:37 am EDT, Fri May 2, 2014

Event could relate to Samsung Gear Fit, S Health app

Samsung is planning to hold an event relating to healthcare, according to requests to the media to "save the date" on May 28th. The meeting, scheduled to take place in the morning somewhere in San Francisco, will apparently see "a new conversation around health" begin, though it is not entirely clear what Samsung could be launching or updating at the event.

The invitation received by Engadget came from Samsung's Semiconductor division, which could be a sign that it will feature components, rather than consumer products. With that in mind, it is likely that the event will feature sensors for monitoring the body's vital functions, or potentially a fitness tracker.

Samsung is already trying to take on the fitness tracking market with some of its existing devices. The company's recent flagship launch, the Galaxy S5, includes a heart rate sensor on the back of the smartphone which can be used in tandem with Samsung's S Health app. The Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo, and the Gear Fit also have built-in heart rate monitors, though Samsung does not currently offer a pure fitness tracker outside of the smart watch collection.
