Adidas adding Spotify support for miCoach Smart Run in December

updated 12:53 pm EDT, Fri May 2, 2014

Adidas fitness tracker will offer offline Spotify music playback before end of year

Adidas is collaborating with Spotify to add offline music playback to its miCoach Smart Run fitness tracker. The update will allow wearers of the smart watch to store tracks and playlists from the streaming music service on the device, so tracks can be listened while running or working out without the need to carry a smartphone for a data connection.

The miCoach Smart Run is already able to hold up to 3GB of music on its internal storage, with audio fed to wireless headphones using Bluetooth. The addition of offline Spotify playback will let the user select music appropriate to their workout, though it is likely to only work for Spotify Premium subscribers. Adidas confirmed the partnership with Engadget, with the update set to arrive on the Smart Run by the end of this year.

The two companies have also worked together on a web tool designed for runners. Entering a city and a "favorite running track" into Boost Your Run, along with adding a distance range and the difficulty, will generate a few potential routes via RunKeeper, as well as a playlist of appropriate songs and a link to play it in Spotify's web player.
