Sony launches 24.3MP Alpha A77 II DSLR with 79-point autofocus

updated 02:55 pm EDT, Thu May 1, 2014

Sensor inside updated Alpha A77 II 20 percent more sensitive than predecessor

Sony has launched another camera in its Alpha range, updating the Alpha A77 it released in 2011. The A77 II is a DSLR with a 24.3-megapixel APS-C Exmor CMOS sensor, similar to the previous model but claimed to be 20 percent more sensitive, though this time Sony has improved the 19-point autofocus of the A77 to have 79 points, including 15 cross points in the center.

Paired with the Bionz X image processor, the A77 II has an ISO range between 100 and 25,600, a maximum continuous shooting rate of 12fps with continuous autofocus, 1200-zone evaluative metering, a shutter speed of 1/8000 of a second, and gull HD video recording at 60p and 24p using AVCHD 2.0. Videographers are also catered for with the camera, including a three-level AF tracking sensitivity adjustment option, a pro-style Zebra function, audio level metering, and an option for a clean HDMI output to an external monitor or device.

Separate control dials on the water-resistant housing reside in front and behind the grip for quick adjustments, a total of 51 functions can be assigned to the 11 buttons, and three frequently-used groups of shooting modes and other settings can be stored and selected using the mode dial. The 2.4 million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder is accompanied by a 3-inch LCD with three-axis tilting, while its onboard Wi-Fi and NFC pairing allows for remote control using a mobile app on a smartphone or tablet.

Sony is shipping the Alpha A77 II for $1,200 for the body alone, or for $1,800 bundled with a 16-50mm F2.8 lens, this June.
