Photo sharing service releases iOS update, adds text and video chatting

Snapchat, a photo sharing app that allows its users to send an image that cannot be saved, is releasing a notable update for iOS devices. Featuring new ways to interact with other users, Snapchat's latest version includes a Chat feature, which offers text-based messaging, and video chatting, named "Here" within the interface. To utilize the Chat feature, one swipes right on a friend's name in the inbox to start text messaging, and messages disappear upon leaving the window.

The new video chat feature can be initiated by swiping up to share video from the front-facing camera, and a swipe gesture down to share video on the rear facing camera; by pressing and holding the blue photo button within a conversation, users can pop in and out of live video chat. Snapchat is available as a free download on iTunes.

MyFitnessPal adds motion tracking capabilities to app for iPhone 5s users

Calorie and diet tracker MyFitnessPal has received an update today, which now includes motion tracking for iPhone 5s users. MyFitnessPal can now sync information gathered by activity tracking devices such as Fitbit, Jawbone UP, and others, as to chart daily step progress as well as calorie adjustments based upon activity level. Using the M7 coprocessor found in the iPhone 5s, steps can now be automatically be tracked by the app.

MyFitnessPal states on its app's iTunes Store page that its access to the phone's M7 coprocessor only occurs during the normal syncing process, and so no additional impact on battery life should be noticed. MyFitnessPal is free to download, with version 5.2 requiring iOS 6.0 or later.
