Low prices dev kit offers parallel computing with Tegra K1 core

Nvidia announced that they are now shipping the Jetson TK1 supercomputer kits which have been aimed at "developing embedded applications and devices" for various projects ranging from robotics to medical diagnostics. The kit features a small board powered by the Tegra K1 processor, the company announced in March at the GPU Technology Conference.

Full specs for the five-inch by five-inch board have been released, indicating that the board will be fully functional out of the box without the need to purchase a separate operating system. The Jetson TK1 will include 16 GB 4.51 eMMC memory, on top of 2 GB of RAM with 64-bit width, which is driven by the Tegra combo 192-core Kepler GPU and 4-plus-1 quad-core ARM Cortex-A15 CPU mobile processor. Other specs include a SPI 4NByte boot flash, Gigabyte Ethernet powered by the Realtek RL8111GS chipset, one USB 2.0 micro AB port, one USB 3.0 port A, a SATA data port, a RS232 serial port and audio driven by the ALC5639 Realtek audio codec with mic in and line out.

The kit will include a modified version of the Ubuntu 13.04 Linux distro, dubbed "L4T," that has been optimized for use with the Tegra. Additional software such as a CUDA toolkit, Open GL 4.4 drivers and the Nvidia VisionWorks toolkit are said to be included. The kit also includes the AC adapter needed to power the device, rubber feet, USB micro-B to USB A adapter, and a quick start guide.

The $192 kits, which have been aimed at developers and hobbyists alike, are available through online outlets like Newegg and Microcenter. However, the kits aren't set to begin shipping to consumers until May 15 or 16 depending on the site.
