LeapFrog launches LeapBand child fitness tracker, companion app

updated 10:03 am EDT, Thu May 1, 2014

Inexpensive wearable aimed to incentivize healthy habits, good eating

Educational hardware developer LeapFrog has unveiled the LeapBand, the first wearable activity tracker designed for children that encourages active play and other healthy habits. As the child earns points through active play, additional games are unlocked, as well as more challenges, extra levels of play, and also virtual rewards given for an on-screen pet.

The LeapBand activity tracker comes with eight different customizable pets from LeapFrog's Pet Pals franchise -- a cat, dog, dragon, monkey, panda, penguin, robot and unicorn -- which can be customized by color and name. With a "virtual pal," children can play 10 preloaded active games and challenges with access to 40 additional free challenges.

In addition to the active play on LeapBand, a free downloadable companion app called the Petathlon will also be made available. In the Petathlon app, kids can compete as their virtual pet in six mini-games like archery, surfing and bobsledding to win extras, including medals and new tracksuits for the virtual pet on the LeapBand. The Petathlon app is available for download to a child's LeapPad Ultra, or an iOS or Android smartphone or tablet.

The LeapBand activity tracker will be available in green, pink and blue in the US for $50 in August. Additional activities and challenges are free and available for download via LeapFrog Connect for LeapBand.

Sounds cool, but the screen seems so tiny to play games. Then again, for 4yr olds, maybe it's fine.
