Sandisk offers Optimus Max 4TB SAS SSD to enterprise

updated 09:35 am EDT, Thu May 1, 2014

Drive uses MLC, gives 400MBPS transfer speeds

Flash storage specialists SanDisk Corporation today announced the Optimus Max Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) solid state drive (SSD), the industry's first 4TB SAS SSD. The new 2.5-inch 19nm eMLC-based SSD is capable of up to 400MB per second read and write, with up to 75,000 read operations per second, and 15,000 write operations per second.

The drive is aimed at legacy enterprise applications, such as media streaming, data warehousing, and video on demand. Data reliability is one unrecoverable error in 10^17 bits read. Mean time between failure is said to be 2.5 million hours, meaning in a population of 1,000 drives, one of the drives will fail on the average every 2,500 hours. The drive draws 7W of power under load, versus up to 60W in a standard 10,000 RPM hard drive.

Pricing for the new SSD is available upon request.
