Samsung Evolution Kit updates UHD televisions from 2013 with 2014 smart TV features

Samsung has unveiled the 2014-edition of its UHD Evolution Kit in South Korea, before a wider global release. Just like last year's version, the Evolution Kit upgrades the 4K-resolution televisions sold by the manufacturer in the previous year, providing owners with access to the company's more-recent smart TV features without buying another television.

The box provides support for HEVC, reports SlashGear, allowing the televisions to decode content using the codec in a similar way to Sony's 4K Media Player for Europe. HDCP, MHL, and updates to HDMI are also included in the device, as well as the ability to watch UMAX, South Korea's first Ultra HD broadcasting channel. The built-in quad-core processor will provide a speed boost and power the newer smart TV features, along with a new remote control, and though Samsung's blog doesn't outline what the features will be, it's likely to include the motion control upgrade to finger gestures, and an updated voice control system.

A release date for the 2014 UHD Evolution Kit is unknown, though it will launch in South Korea ahead of the rest of the world. While a price is speculated to be around $300, a small price for buyers of the expensive televisions, Samsung has supplied a number of pre-orders of 2013 televisions with a voucher that provides the Evolution Kit at no charge.
