Transcend launches JetDrive SSD upgrades for MacBooks

Each unit comes with USB 3.0 enclosure

Transcend has launched a new line of upgrade kits, the JetDrive SSD series for the MacBook Air and Retina MacBook Pro. The kits offer up to 960GB of storage, and come bundled with necessary tools and guides, as well as five-year warranties. So that an original SSD doesn't go to waste, and/or for the sake of transferring old files, each kit also comes with an external USB 3.0 enclosure.

JetDrive Toolbox monitoring software is needed for two reasons -- first to monitor the status of a drive, and second to enable TRIM support, which is essential for maintaining speed and longevity on an SSD. Transcend is claiming that its drives have maximum read/write speeds of 495MBps.

Prices range between $190 and $600. There are three kit categories: one for early Airs, another for mid-2012 Airs, and the last for mid-2012 Retina Pros. The latter two offer 240, 480, or 960GB capacities, but the original Air is restricted to 240 or 480GB. 2013-model MacBooks aren't supported due to their using PCIe.
