Sony announces Vaio Fit repairs for battery fault will begin in May

Repairs, refunds offered over Vaio Fit battery overheating fault

Sony has issued an update to its Vaio Fit 11A overheating warning, advising the company is starting to accept reservations for repairs from customers. Starting from May, Sony will be working with its third-party supplier, previously identified as Panasonic, in order to replace the non-removable battery inside the notebook at no charge.

Earlier this month, Sony warned about the batteries used in approximately 26,000 units of the Vaio Fit 11A, and though it mostly affected users in the Asia-Pacific region, the warning also applies to approximately 500 units in the United States, 5,600 in Latin America, and 7,000 in Europe. Three incidents of partial burns to the chassis were reported to Sony at the time of the warning, which asked users to shut down and keep the notebook unplugged just in case.

Spotted by Engadget, the new European advisory lists 12 different model numbers with a repeated warning to shut down the device. A hotline has been set up for affected users to call and leave their details, so that Sony could contact them back the following day. Similar processes for customers in Japan and the United States have also been created, which will involve the collection of the PC by Sony and the later return after it has been repaired, or alternatively a full refund.
