Facebook buys out Moves fitness app for iOS and Android

updated 11:00 am EDT, Thu April 24, 2014

App to stay available as separate entity

Facebook has bought out Finnish firm ProtoGeo Oy and its signature product, Moves, a health and fitness tracking app for iOS and Android. ProtoGeo says it will start contributing to Facebook's own services in an unspecified capacity. Moves will continue to exist as a standalone app though, and ProtoGeo adds that there are "no plans to change that or commingle data with Facebook."

Moves has been a signature app on the iPhone, particularly since the arrival of the iPhone 5s, which has an M7 motion co-processor for increased accuracy. Around the same time, ProtoGeo introduced the first version of the Android app. In February the apps gained support for over 60 new activity types, extending beyond the core elements like walking, running, and cycling.

What Facebook wants to do with the Moves technology is unknown. The company has been extending in unexpected directions in the past several months, for instance buying Oculus VR for $2 billion.

Excellent app that I use daily...beautifully designed. I'm with the last paragraph...what Facebook wants with this is puzzling other than to further monitor your whereabouts.
