4K Media Player adds HEVC decoding to 2013, 2012 Sony 4K TVs

Sony has launched a third iteration of its 4K Media Player, this time aimed at the European market. The FMP-X5 media streamer is said by Sony to be intended for models of its Bravia 4K televisions sold in 2012 and 2013 that do not have a built-in HEVC decoder, allowing those televisions the ability to watch Ultra HD-resolution streaming content.

According to TechRadar, the media streamer is designed for the KD-84X9005, KD-65X9005A, and KD-55X9005A, connecting though a HDMI port. The unit is effectively a slimmed-down version of the recently-announced FMP-X10, though it lacks the internal storage and oddly will not work with Sony's own Video Unlimited 4K content service. The available content for it is also currently lacking, with Netflix being the only major streaming service offering 4K content, but Sony is considering adding support for Google's VP9 codec, which could make 4K videos on YouTube viewable on the system.

Sony will be offering the FMP-X5 to customers directly from August, priced at £350 ($590).
