Start Menu could return in rumored Windows Update in August

updated 02:23 pm EDT, Wed April 23, 2014

Windows 8.1 could get Start Menu earlier than first thought

The Start Menu could be making its way back to Windows desktops in another Windows 8.1 update later this year, according to rumors. A second update for the operating system is apparently on the way, landing sometime in the third quarter of this year, and may see Microsoft bringing back the Start Menu before its expected return in the next version of Windows.

Sources of CNET seem to agree with Russian leaker Wzor for the update's release sometime in August or September. The rapid release after the recent Windows update is thought to be down to an attempt by the Windows development team to speed up its processes and release timings, differing from the slower, methodical approach used for developing Windows 7 and Windows 8.

The contents of the update is speculated to include the Start Menu, giving users an alternative from the Start Screen currently used in Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. Sources of The Verge claim it will be very likely to appear in the update, and will be similar to what Microsoft detailed at the Build developer conference, namely a hybrid of Windows 7's Start menu with added Live Tiles.

There is a possibility that Metro-style apps will be usable from the desktop, held within a window. Sources advise that Microsoft is pushing for it to be added to the update, but it could be sidelined for a later release in another major update or a new Windows release. Microsoft is also expected to combine Windows RT and Windows Phone into one product in the future, though this is more likely to be in a full Windows release that could take place early next year.
