Google rumored to work with MediaTek for budget Nexus smartphone

updated 07:58 am EDT, Fri April 18, 2014

Low-cost Nexus smartphone could be priced at under $100

The next model in the Google Nexus smartphone collection could be a low-budget handset, according to reports. Google is said by report sources to be working with Taiwan-based chip producer MediaTek on a mobile device that, while relatively low in overall specification, could end up being sold by the company for under $100 off-contract.

The report by spotted by Phone Arena is said to have come from sources inside Taiwanese supply chains, and would mark Google's first budget-focused Nexus device if true. It is possible that some of the low-cost construction techniques employed by Motorola in the Moto G will appear in the device, and though it is believed to run Android as an operating system, it is unclear how low the specifications will go.

If genuine, it is possible that the rumored budget Nexus device won't be immediately made available in developed markets, such as the United States and parts of Europe. This could possibly be a play by Google to enter into emerging markets with its own devices, somewhere other manufacturers are also headed with low-cost devices.
