Dropbox buys out Loom photo service, Hackpad collaboration tool

updated 01:55 pm EDT, Thu April 17, 2014

Likely meant to boost Carousel

Cloud storage service Dropbox has bought out Loom, a photo storage and organization service, according to a notice on the latter company's website. Additionally acquired by the file sharing locker is collaborative document service Hackpad which will continue to support its app, unlike Loom.

Loom only dates back to July 2013, and was offering cross-platform photo/video sync with options like albums and full-resolution images. It produced an iOS app with automatic upload functions, and a desktop uploader for Macs.

Hackpad and Loom were both Y Combinator startups. Hackpad talent will likely be used to enhance Dropbox's existing suite of collaborative tools.

Loom's service will remain in operation until May 16th. The company is meanwhile offering the ability to export files to Dropbox or a ZIP file, and/or switch to Dropbox's Carousel service, which shares similar functions. People who do switch to Carousel will get the same amount of free space forever; paid Loom subscribers will get the same quota on Carousel/Dropbox for free for a year.

The acquisitions are presumably meant to bolster Carousel while also shutting out potential competitors for both. Loom is Dropbox's second buyout within a month, following a deal to pick up Readmill. Terms of either deal were not announced.
