Google launching test of fiber Internet for business in Kansas City

Emails sent to small business gaging interest, assessing needs

Google is picking select Kansas City companies to test Google Fiber prototype offerings for business. The business rollout in Kansas City is the first of its kind for the Gigabit Internet service, with Google saying that it is "in the beginning of figuring out what that product could look like, and that's why we're launching this pilot." Small businesses in the area have been emailed to inquire if there was an interest in testing the service, in exchange for feedback. Applicants must respond by April 25 with staff size, network requirements, and the name of its current Internet provider.

"Part of this is just figuring out what small businesses want in an Internet product, and working with them to hopefully build a really great small business offering over the next few months." Google spokesperson Jenna Wandres told The Kansas City Business Journal. "There's been a lot of interest so far."

For residences, Google offers three different packages for Fiber users in Kansas City. The Gigabit + TV option costs $120 per month, and gives users 1Gb upload and download speeds with no data caps, along with the Fiber TV box and all available channels, the Storage Box, the Network Box, the Nexus 7 tablet and a 1TB Google Drive. A second option, consisting of the gigabit connection without caps, the Network Box and 1TB Google Drive, will cost $70 per month. Both of these packages waive the $300 construction fee for initial installation. The third package consists of the Network Box, 5Mbps downstream, 1Mbps upstream, and no data caps for free, but a one-time $300 buildout fee is assessed.
