Excel Online adds comments, OneNote gains printing options

Microsoft has made a number of updates to its Office Online web apps, just over a month after its rebranding and relaunch. Changes to the online versions of Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and OneNote apply to all users of the online productivity suite, with Chrome users also benefiting from the addition of the Office Online apps to the Chrome Web Store.

The addition to the Chrome Web Store allows users to "create new Office documents online with a single click" from the desktop, according to the Microsoft Office Blog. Separate listings for Word, PowerPoint, and OneNote exist in the story, adding icons to the services to the Chrome App launcher, and while Excel is notably missing, Microsoft states it will be added to the store shortly.

Word Online will have the option to add and view comments in the View mode extended to the editing mode, allowing others to see the comments while it is being edited. Footnotes and endnotes have also been simplified, allowing them to be added inline. List creation is said to be more intelligent and closer to the desktop version, with the post giving the example of typing under an existing numbered list adds the line as a new part of the same list.

Excel gains the ability to add new comments, and the option to edit or delete existing comments. Support for VBA has also been included, and the Tell Me support function from Word has also been incorporated into the app.

PowerPoint Online includes a new high fidelity view of slides, making the slides appear closer to what they would look like in the final presentation, and performance and video playback optimizations, including embedding YouTube videos. Lastly, OneNote adds the option to print notes and an updated view that apparently maximizes "reading and editing space."

The updates Word, Excel, and OneNote are going live today, with the changes to PowerPoint Online set to take place later this week.
