Amazon smartphone launch anticipated for end of June, claims report

Wall Street Journal sources believe Amazon phone will ship by end of September

Amazon is preparing to release its long-rumored smartphone in the second half of this year, claims sources of the Wall Street Journal. The retailer has allegedly demonstrated the device to developers in Seattle and San Francisco, with an official announcement planned for the end of June, and for the smartphone to ship by the end of September.

Earlier claims of a multi-camera interface resurface in the report, with the company using retina-tracking with four front-facing cameras or sensors, in order to provide a realistic three-dimensional image. It will be able to work out the position of a person's eyes and its motion, with a movement closer to the display triggering a zooming motion on the 3D image itself. It will also apparently manipulate text based on the phone's movement, and could give 3D games more depth than usual.

The report is unclear as to what the specifications of the smartphone will be, though it apparently will use screens from Japan Display, a producer of iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, as well as another producer. While it is not confirmed what operating system the device will work on, it is likely to run on a similar fork of Android as the existing Kindle Fire tablet range, and use Amazon's own app store instead of Google Play.

Amazon is allegedly ordering 600,000 units of the device for mass production, according to a source, with production set to begin later this month. This figure is remarkably similar to a recent claim by an analyst, where 600,000 devices would be produced by the second quarter of this year. The same analyst also believes Amazon will produce between 2 million and 3 million units before the end of this year.
