Google Play Music app on Android can cast directly to Sonos speakers
Sonos is adding support for Google Play Music to its multi-room speaker system, the company has confirmed. While both Android and iOS will gain the extra support, users on Android will be able to control music playback from the Google Play Music app itself, and marks the first time the speaker manufacturer is allowing a third-party app to control the speakers directly.
The existing Sonos Controller app will still need to be installed on mobile devices for it to work, reports GigaOM, though either app can be used for audio management. When connected to the same network as the Sonos speakers, the Google Play Music app connects using the same icon used for the Google Chromecast, and while it allows for selection of individual or groups of speakers, it cannot group speakers itself.

The extra support will roll out to 25 countries, and will work with the All Access subscription as well as the free cloud locker. Sonos speaker owners using iOS devices will still be able to use the service via the Sonos Controller but not through the Google Play Music app, as it will only work with Android devices. There is no word on when the extra support will be added to the iOS Google Play Music app in the future.
