Intel moving some operations out of Costa Rica; 1,500 laid off

updated 09:23 am EDT, Wed April 9, 2014

Move part of previously announced initiative to consolidate manufacturing

Intel has announced that it is shedding 1,500 jobs from its Costa Rica operations. The move is cited as part of the chipmaker's efforts to reduce costs and improve efficiency, and will maintain "geographic closeness between plants and main markets" by moving the now vacant positions to Asia. The manufacturer said in a statement announcing the restructuring that more than 1,200 employees will remain in Costa Rica. Intel is shifting most of its engineering team in a streamlining effort, partially in response to falling PC demand worldwide.

"Intel helped Costa Rica position its name in the world of foreign direct investment and high technology," Anabel Gonzalez, Costa Rica's minister of foreign trade said in a statement about the workforce reduction. "Today, more than 15 years later, Costa Rica is a leader in different industries, and has become a highly competitive location for high-tech manufacturing, services and, more recently, research and development activities."
