Nvidia upgrades Shield to Android KitKat, adds out-of-home GameStream

updated 03:16 pm EDT, Mon April 7, 2014

Nvidia Shield can be used to stream games over the Internet from home PC

Nvidia's latest Android 4.4.2 software update for the Shield handheld game system allows players to stream games from their computer to the device outside of the home. Expanding from the existing in-home streaming, the remote GameStream feature is in beta and requires a hefty connection on each side, with the home PC graphics card compatibility list extended to include the GTX 800M, 700M, and select 600M GPUs in gaming notebooks.

The Console Mode, which allows the Shield to be used as a makeshift console connected to a television by HDMI and using a separate game controller, has also been updated to add support for Bluetooth keyboards and mice, reports Engadget. When used on its own to play Android titles, the device's Gamepad Mapper has been refreshed with a new look, a quick-access shortcut, and easier management of downloaded Mapper profiles.

TegraZone, Nvidia's app providing access to its TegraZone Store and various device features, has been updated to "improve accessibility, discoverability, and usability," according to an Nvidia blog post. A news feed provides updates about Android, Shield, and TegraZone itself, with optional notifications available for new announcements.

At the same time as the new update, Nvidia announced it is reducing the cost of the Shield to $199 until the end of April, representing a discount of $50 from its usual price of $249.
