Micro 3D printer meets Kickstarter goal within 11 minutes

updated 11:28 am EDT, Mon April 7, 2014

Consumer-oriented 3D printer includes self-levelling, configuration

A small 3D printer that launched on Kickstarter reached its crowdfunding goal within 11 minutes. The Micro, a compact 3D printer that hopes to offer the same printing options as the MakerBot Replicator series and other devices but with a more user-friendly approach, has soared past its $50,000 target with 29 days of the campaign left to run.

Measuring 7.3 inches cubed and weighing 2.2 pounds, the Micro is able to print ABS, PLA, Nylon, and other materials. Capable of creating an item up to 4.6 inches high with a base print area measuring 109mm by 113mm (4.3 inches by 4.4 inches), the Micro creates objects at a resolution of between 50 and 350 microns per layer, with a 15-micron positioning accuracy.

The printer is said to be usable with Windows, Mac, and Linux-based systems, connects over USB, and uses touch-capable M3D software to provide an "effortless, plug-and-play experience," though advanced users can take advantage of it's support for open source software. It also includes a sensor and feedback system built into the print head, letting it automatically level and calibrate for the user automatically.

At the time of writing, the Micro 3D printer has sold out of its initial $199 and $249 levels, leaving the $299 level as the lowest option to include the device itself, and with a total of $300,000 pledged to the drive. The printers are expected to ship to backers towards the end of this year or the start of 2015, depending on the version backed.
