Verizon cuts prices on select group of smartphone plans

updated 02:45 pm EDT, Wed April 2, 2014

Plans must include 10GB of data, Edge upgrades

Verizon has discounted its smartphone plans for a select group of customers, reports say. For people on a plan with 10GB of data or more, and who are subscribed to the carrier's Edge upgrade scheme, the cost per smartphone has been reduced a further $5 to $15. Plans below the 8GB threshold are unchanged at $30 each; people with subsidized phones must still pay $40 per line.

Verizon has generally resisted changing its plans to better compete with AT&T and T-Mobile. The new discount means that Verizon now matches AT&T in one respect however, and it may be a sign that the carrier is prepared to bend. The current mobile price war has been largely fueled by T-Mobile, which is sacrificing some profit margins to gain customers.

There is a mistake in this article. The discount per smartphone is now 25 dollars, instead of 20; for 10GB plans and up.
