T-Mobile backtracks on employer discount program, grandfathers users

Discount program still dead, not allowing new signups

Under heavy consumer complaint, wireless carrier T-Mobile will continue to extend corporate discounts to existing customers, but is still shuttering the program and not allowing new sign-ups. Late Tuesday night, T-Mobile's Chief Marketing Officer Mike Sievert wrote that "tomorrow we will announce that current [corporate] customer employees can keep their discounts. New plan will apply to new customers."

Shortly after announcing the closure, T-Mobile CEO John Legere's Twitter account was assaulted by irate customers, with the majority of them claiming that they would take business elsewhere if the discounts evaporated. Customers claimed to be hit to the tune of $100 or more annually if the discount program ended.

The executive had claimed that the employer discount program was intended to "help big carriers close big corporate contracts, with employees as bargaining chips." Legere had also claimed that the move would help T-Mobile continue to simplify wireless contracts and pricing.
