Amazon renews Alpha House, lists new original shows for Instant Video

updated 03:25 pm EDT, Mon March 31, 2014

Recent Amazon Studios pilots graduate to full series, recording in 4K

Amazon is adding to its collection of exclusive content, by revealing which shows from its most recent Amazon Studios pilots roster will be made into full seasons. At the same time as announcing the six shows that will be heading to Prime Instant Video, the retailer also confirmed existing original show and previous graduate from the Pilots system Alpha House will be returning for another season.

The After, an hour-long drama from The X-Files creator Chris Carter, will be joined by Bosch, a show based on a book series following a relentless LAPD homicide detective. Transparent, a "dramedy" about a family with "serious boundary issues," and the classical music comedic drama Mozart in the Jungle have also made the cut. Two series for children, Gortimer Gibbon's Life on Normal Street and Wishenpoof!, are aimed at 6 to 11 year olds and preschoolers respectively.

As it previously revealed, Amazon will be filming The After, Bosch, Mozart in the Jungle, and Transparent at 4K resolution. The Ultra HD content will be welcomed by owners of televisions capable of displaying the high resolution, as there is still a distinct lack of mainstream media covering the resolution, though Amazon is not the only one who is working with it. Sony offered the loan of a media server pre-loaded with movies to buyers of its 84-inch 4K television, in an attempt to justify the resolution's usage, and Netflix is also looking at possibly offering content in the format in the future.

It is possible that the new shows will form part of Amazon's video-related event, which is set to take place on April 2nd. Current rumors suggest the retailer will be launching its own set-top box, possibly in the form of a Chromecast-style dongle.
