Oju Africa launches 'Afro' emoticon sets, aims to improve emoji diversity

A division of African mobile manufacturer Mi-Fone, Oju Africa, has launched a set of emoticons that aim to improve diversity representation among emojis. Debates have been raised recently, according to Wired UK, regarding the lack of diversity in available emojis, which started with an MTV journalist pointing out that there are nearly no non-white emojis in the basic range of moss text-message apps.

The journalist, Joey Parker, contacted Apple's CEO Tim Cook for comment, and received a response from VP of worldwide corporate communications Katie Cotton, expressing agreement in there being a lack of diversity that needs to change. Oju Africa's brown complexion emojis can be downloaded for Android devices.
