updated 10:36 am EDT, Fri March 28, 2014

Recall notice points to two incidents of battery packs overheating, causing damage

Lenovo is recalling notebook batteries used in its ThinkPad ranges, following two reports of battery packs overheating and damaging equipment, though no reports of injury. Approximately 34,500 batteries in the United States and 2,900 in Canada are subject to the recall notice by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, as well as a large number sold in China.

ComputerWorld reports the battery packs from the ThinkPad Edge 11, 13, and 14-series notebooks are affected, as well as notebooks with the model numbers T410, T420, T510, X100e, X120e, X200, X201, and X201s sold between October 2010 and April 2011. The recall also applies to batteries bought separately for between $80 and $150 each. In China, Xinhua notes the company recalled a total of 117,732 battery units in the country.

Current advice to affected users is to turn off the notebook, remove the battery, and continue using the computer using AC power only, until a replacement can be sent. Lenovo has set up a dedicated page for the recall, and aims to ship replacements within three business days.
