Google pushes for 'Powered by Android' branding on new smartphones

updated 12:55 pm EDT, Fri March 28, 2014

Logo rules promote Android at device start-up

Google is pushing to promote the Android operating system further, by requiring device manufacturers to add extra branding to their devices. The start-up screens of the new HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy S5 both now include a "Powered by Android" logo close to the bottom, and could possibly lead to more prominent signs of the mobile operating system's use in the future.

Geek.com received word about the new guidelines, claiming they are now included as part of the Google Mobile Services agreement for new Android devices. Smartphones and tablet manufacturers have to abide by a set of rules in order to offer access to the Google Play Store on their devices, with the new guidance from Google dictating the logo's placement and treatment now forming part of that agreement.

While the reasons behind the new logo are known only to Google, it is suggested it will tell consumers what operating system they are running regardless of the manufacturer's user interface changes.
