Amazon sends invitations to video event, possible set-top box launch

updated 01:59 pm EDT, Thu March 27, 2014

New York media event may be Amazon streaming media device unveiling

Amazon could be preparing to reveal its rumored set-top box next week, after the retailer sent invitations to the media for a special event. The gathering, set to take place in New York on April 2, is said by the company to introduce "an update on our video business" with Peter Larsen, Vice President in charge of Amazon Kindle, and is thought to involve some sort of hardware launch.

Sources of Recode seemingly confirm the launch of the device, though not any specific information about what the device will be. Previous rumors suggest it could take the form of a HDMI dongle that offers media streaming, similar to the Google Chromecast. Streaming Amazon Instant Video and Prime Instant Video content is almost certain to form part of the device's capabilities, though it remains to be seen if Amazon will extend the device to other services, such as Netflix or Hulu.

There is also the possibility it will have some form of gaming component. A recent leak provided images of an Amazon-branded game controller, while other rumors talked about a game streaming service that used cloud-based servers to provide an OnLive-style service, without the need for significant hardware.
