HTC BlinkFeed reaches Google Play, heading to all Android devices soon

updated 01:02 pm EDT, Wed March 26, 2014

HTC news reader app, Zoe camera being prepared for non-HTC use

HTC is preparing to offer its BlinkFeed news reader app to all Android devices in the future. The app has appeared in Google Play but is currently available to download only on the new HTC One, along with a number of other apps associated with the Sense 6 Android user interface, and could be the first of a number of the apps set to appear on smartphones from other manufacturers.

Android Central noticed the accompanying press release states that BlinkFeed would be made to work on "other Android devices," and would launch on Google Play "soon." Google Play currently has BlinkFeed alongside listings for the HTC Service Pack, HTC SenseTV, HTC Gallery, Zoe camera, and HTC Guide. HTC did advise as part of its launch that it would be making access to BlinkFeed available to developers to push information to users, though it is unclear if the same level of access will be granted to the other apps.

While adding the apps to Google Play allows HTC to issue updates without waiting for firmware to pass through the various carriers, giving access to other users could be considered a useful branding exercise for the company, and can potentially generate some much-needed revenue.

It is unknown which other smartphones outside of the HTC range will receive BlinkFeed first, nor when, but the manufacturer revealed to The Verge that the Zoe camera app will also become more widely available to Android users later this year.
