Apple adds NPR as first news channel on iTunes Radio

updated 12:50 pm EDT, Mon March 24, 2014

Local affiliates anticipated soon

Apple is today adding National Public Radio as a channel on iTunes Radio, according to officials with NPR. The stream will be free and run 24 hours a day, mixing live news with the broadcaster's pre-recorded shows. Within the next few weeks, local NPR affiliates should start offering channels of their own. Other details of the agreement with Apple are unknown, but NPR is run as a non-profit.

The addition marks the first instance of news programming on iTunes Radio. The service has so far concentrated exclusively on music, particularly since hooks built into iOS and iTunes make it easy for listeners to buy songs and albums that they hear. Increasingly, Apple is using iTunes Radio as a way of premiering new albums to promote sales.

Local stations may add channels of their own, but this still isn't good news for them. Those who go with the national feed won't have a reason to support their local station. Of course, radio in general has been by the iDevice revolution. Why listen to music you may not like with commercials when you can have just the music you like with no interruptions.

If you're going to have a news channel on iTunes Radio at all, NPR is a superb choice. Their shows are generally excellent.
