Twitter removes #music iOS app from store, will kill service April 18

updated 09:00 pm EDT, Fri March 21, 2014

Social service tried Ping-like crowd-sourced music discovery

Twitter has quietly announced that it will pull the plug next month on its year-old Twitter #music service, which offered users a way to follow and listen to the music of popular artists and up-and-coming discoveries based on crowd-sourced recommendations. The service will be shut down on April 18, and as of Friday afternoon the iOS Twitter #music app was no longer available on the App Store.

"We continue to experiment with new ways to bring you great content based on the music activity we see every day on Twitter," the company wrote in a follow-up tweet after announcing that it would pull the #music app from the App Store, and shut down the service on April 18. What form any future music-oriented service might take is unclear, but the #music channel appears to have run into the same problem that plagued Apple's Ping social music service: user apathy over a separate service for just music-related activity.
