updated 12:27 pm EDT, Wed March 19, 2014

New drive supports Blu-Ray disks up to 128GB

Mac and PC upgrade and storage technology company Other World Computing has upgraded its OWC Mercury Pro External Blu-ray optical drive to achieve professional-grade 16X BD-R write speeds, adding 128GB BDXL compatibility, and high-speed USB 3.0 connectivity. The upgrade offers expanded support for up to 100GB of data on triple layer BDXL-R/BDXL RE discs and up to 128GB on quad-layer BDXL-R discs.

Features of the package include compatibility with all recordable Blu-ray formats, a FireWire 800 cable, A USB 3.0 cable, and 4MB of buffer memory. Software is also included, such as Prosoft Engineering Data Backup 3, Smile's DiscLabel, and an optional Roxio Toast 11 Titanium with Blu-Ray support add-on.

The OWC Mercury Pro External Blu-ray optical drive is available today from OWC and select retailers for $168. The drive bundled with Roxio Toast 11 Titanium retails for $220.

Never understood the benefit of USB 3 in bd drives. Even at 16x ( which in real world performance is like 8x) speeds, I think USB 2 has more than enough bandwidth.
