Motorola reveals Android Wear-powered Moto 360 smart watch

updated 03:09 pm EDT, Tue March 18, 2014

Summer launch in United States expected for Motorola smart watch

Not to be outdone by LG and its G Watch, Motorola has teased its first smart watch. The Moto 360 will run on Android Wear, also announced today, will differ from most other smart watches on the market, in offering a "round face and premium materials" instead of the squarish appearance shown in the Pebble, the Samsung Gear, and similar devices.

Just as with other Android Wear smart watches, the Moto 360 will offer Google Now-style notifications and alerts to the wearer. A "twist of the wrist" will show notifications on the display, with voice controls promoted by "OK Google" allowing the user to set alarms, send text messages, and control other apps.

The company has not issued much in the way of detail regarding the Moto 360's design, aside from its "iconic design" and material choices, but it will apparently be available "in a variety of styles." More imformation about the Moto 360's design should be made available on Wednesday, as head of consumer experience design Jim Wicks will be holding a Hangout on Air for the device at 1pm CT tomorrow.

Though a price is not known for the Moto 360, Motorola is aiming to ship it globally this summer, with the United States set to be the first to receive it.
