Samsung releases Tizen SDK for wearable devices, Gear 2 smart watch

updated 02:22 pm EDT, Mon March 17, 2014

Tizen wearables SDK attempt by Samsung to garner similar developer support as Pebble

Samsung has made a software development kit for worn devices running on Tizen available to download. Available through the Tizen Developer website, the Tizen SDK for Wearables is hoped by the company to help developers create software for the Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo, two smart watches it unveiled at Mobile World Congress at the end of last month.

The SDK release is a departure for Samsung, as the original Android-based Galaxy Gear did not receive an accompanying SDK release. By offering an SDK, Samsung could be looking for the same sort of success with developers as the Kickstarter-funded Pebble smart watch already does with its own SDK. The release also follows an announcement from Google, with the search company preparing to ship its own Android wearable SDK in the coming days, as well as rumors of an LG-produced Google smart watch.

In a press release, Samsung claims it "continues to focus on shaping the future of wearable technology as well as expanding more possibilities for app developers, partners, and consumers." It also claims to already have more than 100 "unique partnerships" for the watches, including those in the fields of fitness, shopping, social media, and sleep management.
