Image, video leaks claim to show WhatsApp VoIP, Windows Phone update

updated 06:36 am EDT, Mon March 17, 2014

Messaging app could offer voice calling in future update

WhatsApp, the messaging client being acquired by Facebook for $19 billion, could soon add voice calling to its features list, according to reportedly leaked screenshots. The images of the apparent VoIP interface comes at the same time as a video surfaces, seemingly demonstrating an updated version of the client for Windows Phone that is claimed to still be in beta.

The images from iPhoneItalia show a user interface that takes various style cues from the iOS dialer interface, though if genuine, it will likely change appearance to match each platform the service exists on when it rolls out. At the top of the screen, details for the other party of the conversation are displayed, while lower down are mute, messaging, and speaker buttons. It is claimed the calls will be free, with users able to use both Wi-Fi and 3G networks. A potential roll-out date for the feature was not revealed.

The leaked video from WPMania runs through a number of features that are usable in the beta version of the app on Windows Phone. Chat backgrounds and notification sounds custom to individual contacts will be available, with the video also demonstrating some of the privacy controls and back-up options. Again, there is no word on when this update will be available to standard users of the app, though this could be soon, as the current version of the app in the Windows Phone Store shows it as having last updated on the 10th of January.
