Comcast, NRG Energy launching energy co-op in Pennsylvania

updated 11:51 am EDT, Mon March 17, 2014

'Energy Rewards' program offers Comcast benefits, movie screenings to users

Cable provider Comcast has partnered with a division of NRG Energy to launch an electricity-supplying initiative known as Energy Rewards. The very limited trial, in portions of Allegheny County and Beaver County in Pennsylvania, offers entertainment industry-related benefits for customers of the new effort, including "extended freeviews" of premium channels, and prepaid Visa cards as rewards for signing up.

The new effort takes advantage of restructuring of energy markets, allowing consumers to select who provides local power. Existing utilities are still responsible for line maintenance, meter reading, and emergency response.

Other perks available for subscribers are movie ticket discounts from Fandandgo, access to movie screenings, contests, and time-related "milestone" rewards which have yet to be disclosed. The co-op offers a pair of energy plans -- a six-month variable plan, offering 10 percent off NRG Energy's normal pricing, and a fixed-price plan that guarantees a consistent monthly energy rate for a full year.

The partnership is the first of its kind. At this point, it is unknown what regulatory board would oversee any partnership between a media conglomerate like Comcast and an energy supplier.
