Amazon streaming device rumored to be dongle offering game streaming

updated 04:08 pm EDT, Mon March 17, 2014

Chromecast-like dongle from Amazon could offer high-end gaming

Amazon's rumored media streaming device may have more in common with the Google Chromecast than previously thought, according to a report. The retailer is said to be making the media player in the form of a dongle that can plug directly into a television's HDMI port, with one rumor claiming that it would have the ability to stream high quality games from a server, instead of relying on modified mobile titles for gaming.

Sources of TechCrunch claim it will offer a similar service to OnLive, streaming games over the Internet at 30fps, instead of the in-home streaming offered by the Nvidia Shield. Streaming games made for PC or Mac, such as titles sold through Amazon's download store, would in theory allow the device to compete against current-generation game consoles, such as the Microsoft Xbox One and the Sony PlayStation 4.

Previous rumors in January suggested Amazon was working on a sub-$300 Android game console, while in February the retailer acquired Double Helix Games, the game studio responsible for Killer Instinct for the Xbox One. Over the weekend, images of what are claimed to be Amazon-branded game controllers surfaced in Brazilian regulatory documents, showing a device with typical game controls and triggers, as well as a row of media buttons.

As with previous long-time Amazon hardware rumors, it is difficult to estimate a release date for the system, if it exists. It is even possible that the device being reported on is just one of a number of potential designs Amazon is looking into producing, and could still wildly differ before its release.
