Mozilla pulls plug on Metro version of Firefox browser for Windows

updated 01:00 pm EDT, Sat March 15, 2014

Browser version peaking at 1,000 daily active users since adoption

Vice President of Firefox Jonathan Nightingale has announced that Mozilla will be taking the Windows 8 version of Firefox out of development. According to Nightingale, the release has never seen a peak of "more than 1,000 active daily users in the Metro environment" making it a risk for Mozilla to continue supporting it through its end of life.

Nightingale went on to say that even though there is a risk in not continuing the project if the Windows Modern design language was suddenly widely adopted, the company would still have the code to fall back on. Committing resources now to a project that may never see wide adoption is a risk for the company, especially given the small amount of feedback the company may receive given the low number of users of the Windows 8 version. Bug fixes and follow-up work would be required after a release, making it harder and more time consuming to complete since it would be put to market "without much real-world testing."

The project began in 2012 as a way to bring Firefox to the Windows 8 "Modern" touch interface. However, since the release of Windows 8 many users have announced displeasure in the live tile experience and the lack of the desktop features that Windows had previously championed. This caused Microsoft to bring back some of the familiar aspects of previous versions of Windows with the 8.1 release.
