Password can be requested for all in-app, store purchases
Google is starting to roll out an update to the Google Play Store app, changing the way it deals with purchases. Version 4.6.16 of the store now allows users to request for the account password to be entered for every single purchase from within apps and from the store itself, rather than allowing for a 30 minute password-free window after the password's entry.
The change to the Play Store's app password policy comes days after a new class action lawsuit was filed against Google, claiming the window failed to protect parental device owners from potential unauthorized purchases made by their children. The new suit mirrors a similar case against Apple, which led to a settlement of $32.5 million.
Android Community reports that the new Play Store adds an in-app purchases indicator inside the permissions window, in an attempt to warn users about the potential purchase options. The app has also relocated its settings and help menus into the sidebar, while one settings option relating to how new apps are treated after installation has been renamed from "Auto-add widgets" to the clearer "Add icon to Home screen."
