New accessories for entry-level Samsung smartphone to help with accessibility

Samsung has revealed a set of accessories for the Galaxy Core Advance, aimed at helping people with disabilities. A stand for the visually impaired and NFC-based TecTiles for voice notes are offered, along with a cover for the smartphone, which allows the user to detect obstacles, objects, or people nearby via the use of ultrasonic waves.

The Ultrasonic Cover has a range of up to two meters (6.5 feet) in front of the user, when held normally. The user is alerted to nearby items that block their path by the Galaxy Core Advance vibrating, or optionally by text-to-speech feedback.

The Optical Scan Stand allows the Galaxy Core Advance to be placed above and focus on items that need to be read, with the stand automatically activating the Galaxy Core Advance's Optical Scan application. When a sheet is placed underneath the stand, the application is triggered and the text read straight away.

The Voice Label is an NFC sticker that is designed to allow the user to quickly add a verbal label to items it is stuck to or placed nearby. The intention is for notes or instructions to be read out to the smartphone and linked to the sticker, with playback triggered when the phone interacts with the label.

The three accessories are not the only ones planned by the company to help with accessibility, with Samsung claiming to plan for more additions to other Galaxy devices in the future.
