Amazon increasing US Prime subscription cost to $99 in April

Price rise of Amazon Prime in United States follows changes in UK, Germany

Amazon is raising the price of its Prime subscription in the United States in April. The existing $79 annual rate, which provides access to free two-day shipping, Prime Instant Video, and the Kindle Owner's Lending Library, will increase on April 17th to $99 per year, and comes after similar recent price changes to Amazon Prime in areas of Europe.

The price changes will also extend to the student rate, reports The Verge, increasing by $10 to $49 per year. New customers appear to still have the $79 rate available to them, with the retailer likely to start promoting the rate change as a way to gain more Prime users as time moves closer to April 17th.

Last month, Prime in the UK rose from £49 ($81) to £79 ($131) per year, though the change also allowed Amazon to rebrand LoveFilm as Prime Instant Video and include it under the Prime subscription for the first time, with a similar move occurring in Germany. Despite murmurs of a possible music service, the price increase in the United States does not appear to give any extra benefits to subscribers.
