Kenwood: no aftermarket CarPlay accessories until 2015

updated 04:58 pm EDT, Thu March 13, 2014

Pioneer distances itself from service rep's statement

Kenwood isn't planning any aftermarket CarPlay add-ons for 2014, says a marketing manager for the company, Scott Caswell. He in fact suggests that Apple could be reserving CarPlay as a perk for automakers, who may want it to entice new car buyers. The manager adds, though, that Kenwood products already support some subsets of CarPlay, like Siri and media playback. CarPlay proper involves duplicating iOS control functions on an in-dash display.

Rival Pioneer, meanwhile, is downplaying a remark from a customer service representative that indicated the company is exploring CarPlay add-ons of its own. "The story was not an official statement by Pioneer and was taken out of context," writes communications executive Jaed Arzadon. He has declined to expand on that position, however.

Without aftermarket options, most people likely won't have a chance to try CarPlay until at least 2015, if not later. So far just a handful of companies -- Volvo, Ferrari, and Mercedes-Benz -- have announced compatible 2014 models, leaving the first efforts from mainstream brands like Honda and Ford out of the loop until the 2015 cycle.
