Sony rumored to unveil virtual reality efforts at GDC next week

updated 08:38 am EDT, Thu March 13, 2014

First Sony VR headset claimed to beat first iteration of Oculus Rift

Sony could be preparing to reveal its own virtual reality headset at the Game Developer's Conference next week, according to a rumor. According to "developers familiar" with the device, the initial version of the headset will be shown to developers alongside a demo from a first-party studio, with the reception of the device potentially dictating if Sony will proceed to a public release.

Sources of Edge claim the company will use its "Driving the future of innovation" session on Tuesday to reveal the device, hosted by senior R&D executives Richard Marks and Anton Mikhailov. Despite their presence, it is thought that there will not be any pressure on developers to adopt the technology, though it could do so in the future if the electronics giant proceeds with production and includes connectivity with the PlayStation 4.

Little is known about the headset itself, aside from Sony's exploration of the market. A prototype being used by some third-party developers is apparently superior to the first iteration of the Oculus Rift headset, though it could be more comparable to the latest Oculus Crystal Cove development kit. Sony also has history with headsets, producing multiple "Personal Viewer" devices that offer an enveloping 3D experience, though lacks the motion tracking aspect of virtual reality.
